Are there any symptoms of HIV?

Do HIV antibodies form when symptoms appear?

  • so basically about 2.5 weeks ago i had an encounter with a girl. she later told me she was hiv+ after the encounter. a week and 2days after that i started developing symptoms listed on websites. i went and got an hiv test 2 weeks after the encounter, about a week after symptoms first started appearing. and i'm scheduled for another test at the 4week mark. my question is, if i developed symptoms related to hiv infection does that mean that antibodies would have formed already and will be detected on the test? because i know you have to wait 3 months for the test to pick up antibodies, but if you've started developing listed symptoms, if those symptoms are related to hiv infection will u already have developed antibodies as the symptoms progress/disappear? much appreciate the help. symptoms include, swollen lymph node around jaw (developed 1.5 weeks after encounter, lasted about 3 days) blocked congested nose and runny at times (developed 1.5 weeks after encounter, lasted about 1 week) stomach pain and loss of apetite, lost 4lbs since encounter (developed 2.5 weeks after encounter, (today)) if these symptoms are related to hiv infection, would antibodies appear? cheers

  • Answer:

Most likely you are negative to be sure I would get tested again at 6 months and be sure to wrap it up next time and you won't have to worry. "When Should I Be Tested? After a possible HIV exposure: An HIV test will not detect the presence of the HIV virus immediately after exposure. Statistics show that 96% (perhaps higher) of all infected individuals will test positive within 2 to 12 weeks. In some cases, this may take up to six months. Think about this: if you got a negative test at six weeks, would you believe it? Would it make you less anxious? If so, go for it. But to be certain, you will need to be tested again at six months."

Those most at risk of becoming infected should have themselves tested at the next available opportunity. Contact us if you or your partner display the following symptoms: Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, night sweats, or nausea Frequent, bouts of sudden sickness Rapid weight loss Glandular swelling Remember that while there is no definite cure for HIV yet, antiretroviral compounds can drastically improve one's quality of life while living with infection. The sooner HIV is detected and treatment begins, the more effective treatment is likely to be.

You could have HIV symptoms, but it's more likely you have a mild cold. HIV antibodies usually appear within weeks or months of infection-- certainly within 6 months. Having some non-specific symptoms is not a reliable indicator of whether there will be antibodies present.

I would say that antibodies should form as soon as your body realizes there is an infection.. the swollen lymph nodes could be from any kind of illness even a common cold..runny nose I have no idea where you got that I don't think that is a symptom?..The weight loss is a symptom but it maybe cause you are stressing over this whole ordeal...I can tell you though you will come back neg.. You should look up info about the "Window Period" that comes along with HIV infection basically you will and can test neg up to one year or 12 mths after you become infected with HIV...so basically you need to go back and get tested again in 6 mths after the encounter and again at 12 mths after the encounter...AND I REALLY HOPE THAT IS THIS WOMAN DID INFECT YOU WITH HIV YOU WILL HAVE HER PUT IN JAIL CAUSE SHE WAS SUPPOST TO TELL YOU SHE HAD HIV IT IS KINDA THE LAW....But just know that HIV meds have came along way and you will still live a normal life and can live to your expected age...the only thing HIV changes these days is the way you have sex and that is it! JUST BE GLAD YOU DIDNT GET CANCER!! HIV IS NOTHING!
