Can I get HIV from a used needle, used to check blood sugar that was used by my mom?

  • Today I went to go check my blood sugar. When I opened the box that contains the strips i put my finger in the box and I pricked by a used needle I know my mom used it because me and her have diabetes and when I threw that one away (the used needle), I put my finger back in the box to get a new needle and I got pricked again by a used needle so I found out that the needles ands strips were all used and my mother never bothered to throw them out. In all I got pricked by two needles used by my mother to check her blood sugar, I cleaned both pricked fingers with achol and so I'm wondering if i can get HIV from this, me and my mother are related by blood.

  • Answer:

Does your mom even have hiv? Yes you could possibly get hiv from that. Sharing needles is one of the ways hiv is spread

Other answers

You can only get HIV if your mother is infected. Your mother would be at high risk for getting the infection if she gets blood transfusions, uses illegal drugs, has multiple sex partners, is hemophiliac, uses dirty needles herself from third parties or already has the infection. but you are at risk of getting other infections such as hepatitis. You need to put your supplies in a separate area and get tested at your local health department or clinics that provide free testing and counseling. Cleaning the fingers with alcohol after a needle stick does not prevent transmission of the virus.
