Why is my scar so much darker than the rest of my skin?

I recently took the skin off my arm, why has it healed back a different colour to the rest of my skin?

  • After crashing my scooter a while back, i grazed my arm and took the skin more or less completely off. You know when white blood cells come out and so on. Now after about 6 weeks it's completely healed, but it appears to be a different colour to the rest of my arm as if slight pigmentation has happened and it is quite a significant colour difference. Any ideas if this is permanent or what can i do to make it back to how it was before? I don't believe it was deep enough to be a scar!

  • Answer:

Any parts of it that bleed white blood cells will be scarred. It takes 12 months for the healing to be complete so you'll notice it change over time and go more toward your natural color. What happens is the body rushes to close the injury placing cells every which way it can. Then over the next months, it goes back and replaces them with the properly aligned cells.

Your skin probably has scarred- the depth of the wound has nothing to do with the fact that when your skin heals, scar tissue must form to cover the abrasion and knit the edges of the skin back together. If you want to get rid of the scarring, you can treat it with an OTC cream or, alternatively, just wait. Many scars fade on their own.
