Is there treatment for an old white scar?

Treatment of a Hypertrophic (raised) Scar Under a Tattoo?

  • I got a tattoo a few months back hoping that it would make a hypertrophic scar (result of a scarification attempt gone bad) less noticeable. The scar is in the middle of my upper back, and the tattoo goes across my shoulders. The scar is still very noticeable, and in my opinion ruins the tattoo... I have been reading up on treatments for scars like this, and I have no interest in going in for surgery. I am considering: -Corticosteroid injections -Pressure dressings -Silicone sheeting and gel -Over-the-counter topical meds Will any of these mess with my tattoo? Which would be the most effective? Here's my source for treatment types: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scar

  • Answer:

The best treatment would be the cortisone injection, in my opinion.

The cortisone injection is most likely to be effective. It may take several injections to get the job done depending on the age and size of the scar. While waiting for your appointment with the dermatologist, try the over the counter silicone gel sheets. They can be taped in place and should be worn for as many hours a day as you can stand. 24 if you can. Some people find them helpful enough that injection is not required. I don't think any will mess up the tattoo. In the future realize that the placement of a tattoo can cause similar scarring throughout the tattoo, especially on the chest, shoulders and back.
