Can you take an antihistamine and a decongestant at the same time?

Taking a decongestant and expectorant (Zyrtec-D and Mucinex) at the same time? Allergies + pneumonia?

  • I have allergies, for which I take Zyrtec-D or Claritin-D ("D" is the one with Pseudoephedrine), but I also have pneumonia, for which I am taking Mucinex (guaifenesin) and some antibiotics. Will the decongestant interfere with the efficacy of the expectorant? (I assume that the decongestant has a drying effect, whereas the expectorant encourages mucous.) Do the two cancel each other out? What are the impacts and/or side-effects of taking both simultaneously?

  • Answer:

It shouldn't be a big issue, although it is a good idea to talk to your doctor. Anti-histamines don't just dry you out, they counteract the way your immune system is overloading during an allergic attack. Mucinex helps to loosen the phlegm in your chest so you can cough it up.
