Can you join the military with easily controlled/managed breathing allergies?

What causes difficulty of breathing aside from allergies and mucus?

  • For the last year and a half I've had a hard time breathing. I'm a mid twenties male who is in otherwise good health. The difficulty primarily comes from breathing through my nose. It isn't a runny or stuffy (in the mucus sense) nose, it's just.... blocked? Swollen? The best way to word it is that not very much air gets through. Also, to even breathe through my mouth it seems like I need to use a "yawn" style of breathing to get a "good, semi-satisfying" breath. I didn't have this problem a few years ago. I suppose it could be allergies, but I doubt it? Would allergies just develop mid-life like that? Can stress or anxiety cause this? It's not purely mental, I'm actually starving for oxygen, but could the anxiety be manifesting itself physically like this? I went to a ENT doctor but he just stole my money and had me come back time and time again so he could look at my nose and prescribe some nasal spray which I could probably get over the counter. But I'm not sure why my mouth based breathing would be suffering as well. Perhaps that method of breathing has been overworked in my body since my nose is so blocked? Anyways, if anyone has experienced something similar or has any feedback, advice, or just wants to share their own story please feel free. Thanks!

  • Answer:

You've seen an ENT doctor, who would have noticed if you had a deviated septum. You can't be starved if oxygen by a nose problem, medically speaking that is impossible, you state you are a healthy male, but are you emotionally speaking? It sounds a lot like you are all stressed out, panicky, worried, unsure of yourself causing having physical symptom which makes you even worry a lot more. You might consider speaking to your GP about it, who I hope has had a report from the ENT doctor so can recommend a way forward: stress management, referal to a psychologist?

I had that too, got a referral to an ENT specialist. Diagnosed a deviated septum, he did a septoplasty to straighten it out. I still snore, but I breathe a lot better, but still allergic to pollutants, pollen, etc. So my advice is get checked for a deviated septum, you might find that's the problem.
