What is actually a hiccup?

One hiccup every few minutes to an hour after eating?

  • It's been months since I've gone a day without hiccuping. Every time I eat (or drink) I get a hiccup (not a bout of hiccups, just one) 10 or so minutes later, then I get another around 15 minutes later, then I get another 25 minutes later, etc...and it goes on like this all day. If I don't eat I almost never hiccup, I've only hiccuped once before breakfast since this started. I went to my doctor and explained what was happening to her. At first she thought that I meant I only hiccup once and reassured me that I was fine, but when she realized what I'd actually said her face completely changed. It was like I went from being in perfect health to a cancer patient in ten seconds. She mentioned that she thought it was something neurological, but that she was going to try treating me for GERD first, just in case (even though I have no other symptoms) and that I should come back quickly if it doesn't work. As you may guess, it's not working. However, I can't get another appointment with my doctor for weeks thanks to college. Soooo does anyone have ANY idea what it was that she was worried about? She looked really nervous..it was very disconcerting. I realize that hiccups are caused by spasms of the diaphragm. I also realize that they're usually absolutely harmless. I also realize that fullness can cause hiccups, but I really don't understand how that would cause me hiccups for hours after if all ate was a breath mint or a french fry. I even get the hiccups when I swallow the pill that's supposed to be helping my hiccups. Also, I'm 17 and female too long;didn't read: Weird hiccup causes

  • Answer:

Sorry, not an answer to your question but just letting you know that you are not alone. I have a very similar problem where I will hiccup maybe 3 times to 5 times daily and it is just one hiccup at a time. This usually occurs after eating and I don't know if I am just eating too much or what. I really do hope that this isn't a serious problem. I hope we find a cause soon.
