What is the most powerful nasal decongestant available?

Good cold nasal decongestant?

  • Any recommendations for a nasal decongestant to take tonight? I have a cold, the main symptom being nasal congestion. The stuff in my house all includes a sleep aid, but since my last cold I've been prescribed Trazadone for my insomnia, so I'm leary of taking a cold medicine with a sleep aid on top of that. Aren't you supposed to avoid taking other sleep aids with a prescription sleep aid? But on the other hand, the "non drowsy" ones out there, do they contain a stimulant? I'm just trying to figure out what would be safe to take with Trazadone. Though it helps me sleep well enough, I'm afraid even it won't help me sleep tonight if I can't breathe. Any suggestions? I'm going to re-read info about taking Trazadone with OTC meds,

  • Answer:

If this is the only symptom that bothers you, just take OTC nasal decongestant in a pill form, not spray and take aspirin or tylenol for aches and fever. This should not effect the medication you take for insomnia.

try sudafed--the little red ones--they are the only ones that work for me i have terrible allergies but certain times of the yr its all in my head meaning the pain and involving my nose i find sudafed to work best--its ok to take trazadone as well space it out take the sudafed and about 3/4 hours later if needed take the trazadone--i am speaking of the 50mg ones i take those as well. feel better ok.

Just get a bowl of boiling water, cover your head over the bowl with a large towel and breathe in slowly and deeply. If you have any Olbas oil or Vicks then add some to the water, just remember if you do this to close your eyes!

Before going to bed tonight, take a hot shower. The vapor will help clear up your nose. Also, try some Vick's Vapor Rub. Rub some on your nose (not in the nostrils and not too close to your eyes or it'll burn). It'll help you breathe better. You should be less congested by the morning. I hope I helped!

See if you can take Sudafed or the generic version of it. But ask the pharmacist to be sure. If you can't, try some Afrin nasal spray. They even have generic versions of that one at Walmart. The nasal spray should not react with your other medication.
