How long does it take to get results from an HIV test?

• Okay, so my friend called me and said that he went and got tested for HIV and other STDs, but he said that he got his HIV results in like 30 minutes. Now, I'm not a gullible person, but I don't know why he would lie. Can you get your results that quick? I checked on a trusted gov. website and it said that it could be done in 2-3 days. He said he waited six months before getting the test as well. Help!!

  There is a rapid test for HIV which can show results in about 30 minutes. It may take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks to get results back if the testing is done by conventional blood test or oral swab, depending on the procedures at the testing site and lab. (I use a conventional oral swab test, send the sample to the state lab, and get results back in 10-14 days.) The 6 months your friend mentioned refers to the period of time when HIV infection may not show up on tests. The tests are designed to detect antibodies to HIV, and it can take 3 to 6 months for someone to have enough antibodies to HIV for them to test positive. Testing is recommended 3 months after possible exposure, followed by retesting 6 months after possible exposure. More than 98% of people would test positive within 3 months. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months for someone to test positive. In fact, some medical professionals say that testing at 3 months can be considered conclusive. I am more cautious and follow the recommendations of my state Dept. of Health when I speak to clients--testing 3 months after possible exposure followed by retesting 6 months after possible exposure.
