When you have mono, do you always have a fever?

Causes of a mild sore throat, slight fever that disappears, white spots on tonsils, with staying appetite?

  • Thanks for opening my question, and before you say it......i can almost guarantee it's not strep. Story: Woke up on wednesday (it's friday night now) feeling off, noticed white spots on my tonsils, but had no soreness in my throat whatsoever. I ended up suffering through the day and my post-school workout (probably dumb, but it did make me feel better). When i got home i had a slight sore throat and a 101F fever. Just chilled all night, seeing what would happen. Woke up Thursday with a 99F fever, sorer throat, more white spots. I stayed home, obviously. By nighttime my fever was gone, but everything was the same. Still no appointment for the doctor's. Woke up today, still no fever (actually back to my normal self at a very unnormal 96.5F), less sore throat, same amount of white spots. Throughout the day today, still no fever, even though i went through bouts of sweating/freezing, but nothing a fan or blankets couldn't fix. I also ate my first meal since wednesday, even though I've been hungry the entire time (I can't stand the way things taste when I'm sick). I also picked out the white spots on my tonsils, and I'm still undecided on my feelings about. It was a hassle and my throat is now a little sore where before in the morning i had no pain whatsoever, but now i don't have that weird "popcorn kernel in the back of your throat feeling", which everyone hates with a passion. Now the only real reason why I haven't been to a doctor yet is that: 1. My mom thinks no fever, no sickness and 2. I've had something like this but worse twice before (within the year actually), where i was pretty much bed-ridden for a week or more both times with a super high fever, terrible sore throat, huge puss filled tonsils, and overall fatigue with no diet whatsoever.....and not a single doctor ever gave me an answer to what it was. They tested for strep, mono, strep again, full mono culture (i forget the name of it, but it took like 2 weeks....i think), had bloodwork multiple times, and still nothing. Their final verdict? "Oh, just a bad cold"....and they told me to go home and rest up, leaving me to be miserable. So i do kind of agree with my mom about not going to the doctor on this one, but since it is different, I'm thinking it could be something actually identifiable causing this. So i'm just trying to find someone/some facts/articles or anything to persuade my mom to take me to the doctor because i'm still only 17 (male, if it makes a difference). I know that's long as hell....so final question: What could cause a mild sore throat, white spots on tonsils, a mild cough, congestion, but while retaining an appetite and the ability to eat, while actually being dangerous to not directly treat by going to the doctor's office?
