How does the flu/swine flu spread?

my brother is sick, they went to the hospital and he has the flu, the doctor thinks it may be swine flu, im home schooled so im at home all day. my brother is upstairs in his room and im down stairs. my dad said i have to wear one of the hospital face masks all the time. is it really necessary? its extremely hot and uncomfortable. if i don't wear it will i get the flu. i think my dad is over reacting. thanks

If the hospital says he may have swine flu then your dad is not over reacting, it is for your benefit and yes you could get infected. The infection is caused by coughing, sneezing or touching, the bacteria is passed on through theses means so you have to be really careful, do as your dad asks its not for ever and may prevent you from becoming ill. Hope your brother gets better soon.

I'm not 100% sure but I heard that its spread through direct contact not through the air. But try asking the doctor for more information becuase I could be wrong.
