Swine flu, Bird flu, how does it start?

  • I'm very confused about how this all starts. I know genetically we are not the same as pigs or birds. Thus a virus that attacks a pigs immunity wouldn't have the ability to attack a human, or so I have heard. If this is true then how in the world do people come down with bird and swine flu? How does a human contract a virus from an animal when they are not of the same "family"? I'm looking for as many links, preferably not news links but links to studies or medical journals, ect, please. I'm trying to understand but it just makes no sense! Also how do we know a vaccine is safe when it has only been around for 9 months? The testing on it couldn't have been very in depth, how do we know there won't be side effects that don't come about for months or years after getting it?

If swine flu came out a few months earlier this specific strain would have been 1 of the 3 included in the seasonal flu vaccine. Since it did not we had to add this to the flu shot that we normally get.
