Is it normal to have a deformed and rather odd feeling tonsil?

Do I need tonsil removal?

  • Hi, my name is angel and I'm 22 years old, I have a cold or fever cuz my throat itches and I cough alot, I barely get sick cuz the last time I had a cold or fever was like 3 years ago I still have my tonsils but they are small, my mom took me to the hospital and the doctor said I didn't need tonsil removal, so I was wondering if your tonsils are small(not swollen) do I need to take them out anyway? Will they get swollen one day? Remember my tonsils are small and my airway is normal sized but I still have trouble sleeping at night I jolt out of my bed feeling like I'm panicking and falling I also have a choking feeling in my throat but I only get that at least once a week sometimes not even in the entire week, is sleep apnea the only cause for these symptoms? Sorry about the long story I'm just worried and stressed about my health, I forgot to mention that I'm obese I'm 5'8 and I weigh about 226 pounds that's over weight for my height.

  • Answer:

I work as a sleep tech ( that is why i am up so late) and see your symptoms many times a week. Measure your neck too. For a woman over 15.5" is cause for another look at OSA. Take these two test also. First, Berlin Questionnaire; second Eppworth Sleepiness Test. If you fail one or both, take these to your doctor and explain your symptoms along with the test results. I will add that just because you notice the jolting out of sleep once or twice a week does not mean that it down not happen more often than you know.
