Can you get HIV from a needle that is used to check your blood sugar, that was used from your mom?

  • Today I went to go check my blood sugar. When I opened the box that contains the strips i put my finger in the box and I pricked by a used needle I know my mom used it because me and her have diabetes and when I threw that one away (the used needle), I put my finger back in the box to get a new needle and I got pricked again by a used needle so I found out that the needles ands strips were all used and my mother never bothered to throw them out. In all I got pricked by two needles used by my mother to check her blood sugar, I cleaned both pricked fingers with achol and so I'm wondering if i can get HIV from this, me and my mother are related by blood.

  • Answer:

You can if your mom has HIV. If she doesn't have HIV, you can't get it from her.

Only if your mother is HIV positive or has AIDS.

Yes where you prick your finger to check your blood sugar a small amount of blood is drawn threw the needle into the tester. So yes you could get HIV if your mother has it.

Only if your mom has HIV. She needs to dispose of her needles the proper way. That's being just plain lazy on her part and dangerous.

HIV isn't created just by blood mixing. It doesn't appear out of nowhere. You can't get HIV from someone who does not have HIV. It doesn't matter if you are related or not. If your mother does not have HIV, you can not get HIV from exposure to her blood or any of her body fluids. That said, your mother should be disposing of her used needles properly, and you should be more careful.

yes you can if your mother is +ve for HIV, but the chance is slim. its being reported that the percentage of getting hiv from needle-prick injury is roughly around 0.3%-0.4%. that is soo little percentage if compared to hepatitis B infection which can be up to 20% risk if needle-pricked.

Blood to blood transmission is very common. This would not guarantee you to get HIV but getting stuck with a needle that came into contact with a person infected with HIV would be very concerning and would require testing.
