Anyone know anything about problems after getting a mechanical heart valve?
-
My mom had a mechanical (titanium) heart valve about 2 years ago. She has the same problems now that they found her problem. Shortness of breath, extreme fatigue and just breathing problems. She had a doctor that almost killed her that put in a pacemaker, cut a maze in the electical diagram on the top of her heart, and told us she was eat up with cancer. He sent her to a cancer specialist that thought we were crazy. She didn't have cancer, she had a valve not working at all. Her body was not getting any or very little oxygen. Her organs were not working from lack of oxygen. I was wondering, if her having an inner ear infection could mess with her artificial valve? She definitely has problems again. Can it be an inner ear infection? She has one and her doc didn't give her any antibiotics. Can she not have antibiotics? Can anyone help. Oh yeah, anyone living in East Tennessee Dr. Clint Doiron and ..... I can not remember her surgeon but I think it was Michael Something.. Anyway they are great!!! The good Lord above sent those two to earth to help everyone with heart trouble. If anyone wants a doctor to really care about you. These men are what you need.

"living in East Tennessee" Hi Frank, I think the above quotation explains a lot of this. I'm sorry to read of your Mom's continuing troubles. I don't know her history/other risk factors. So, let's focus on the mechanical valve. Post-operative, the valve replacement can yield miraculous improvement in symptoms. The biggest danger, is throwing a clot. That's why your Mom is now on Coumadin, & @a higher therapeutic range. Functionally, her valve is now normal again. Unfortunately, if her heart was already damaged by the leaky valve. That damage remains. Has her Doc mentioned something called LVH (Left Ventricular Hypertrophy)? That would explain the continuing shortness of breath, fatigue, etc... Basically, it means the heart muscle has been stretched out, & can no longer pump as strongly as before. Your sentences on the pacemaker foray is anyone's guess (not enough info, again). Sounds like a road trip to a large, qualified, urban cardiac center is called for. Be sure to stop every hour, & take an extended walk along the way clot formation risk). Good Luck.
