Does lack of sleep cause low blood pressure?

High blood pressure and problems?

  • So okay for the most part up until these past couple weeks, ive been a very healthy 19 year old with very little problems in the past. However, during my sophomore first semester in college, I have had a lot of stress, anxiety, caffiene, and lack of sleep. Well during my break now, I've still had anxiety and stress because ever since the couple panic attacks i have had in college, I have obsessed over checking my pulse and making sure i was at the right heart beat. What concerns me is the last visit to the doctor which was a couple days ago, my blood pressure was 141 compared to my last visit of 121, so my question, I have never had high blood pressure before, but can all the things ive been experiencing like no sleep, anxiety, and stress, plus caffiene, cause higher blood pressure, and do you think that my irregular readings of high blood pressure relate to these things? Should I worry?!!

Hi there, First of all don't worry. That is your problem. School is stressful. The Caffine is bad for you. The lack of sleep high stress and anxiety are going to affect the heart directly. Here is what you do. Sit in a very comfortable spot and breath. Meditate and do deep breathing excercises. Im sure this is all connected and you just need to relax and breath. If there are things that are bothering you and stressing you out, just breath them away. This is the best most effective way to calm your nerves lower you heart rate an reduce blood pressure. The last thing you wanna do is worry. Thats how you got where you are now lol.. If you have to get a guided meditation CD to guide you. Changed my life!Good Luck!

Blood pressure consists of two numbers, something like 120/80 for example. The top number is the pressure while the heart is contracting. The lower number is the pressure in your system while your heart is between beats, or refilling. The lower number is more usually the concern, and only starts to be a concern as it climbs above 90. You're unlikely to have a problem from hypertension at your age, but to set your mind at ease ask your doctor if he or she is concerned. Then do try to fix the lifestyle problems you mention, because yes, they can contribute to the problem. And you don't mention nicotine, but that can contribute as well. Check your blood pressure once in a while to make sure it isn't climbing over time, and try to relax.

First of all, you shouldn't worry. That makes everything worse. It is normal to have an elevated blood pressure reading when you are in the doctor's office. It makes us feel stressed. It's called "White Coat Syndrome." Blood pressure varies all through the day. If you are stressed it can spike up some, even if you have normal blood pressure. What you need to do is take better care of yourself and then you will feel less stressed, and you can handle what you do have. I imagine you normal blood pressure is in the 121 range for the top number. Try to stop worrying about that. You're young, healthy and fine. Stop the caffeine, drink a lot of water and eat a healthy diet. Lose the sodas and junk foods. If you are stressed and not sleeping, you need to do the things that will relieve the stress. Do deep breathing. Whatever you like to do most for exercise. If you don't like to exercise, then walk a lot. Yoga is good for relaxing. If you continue having panic attacks and are unusually stressed, talk to your doctor about medication. But your life will be much better if you can handle those things without medication.
