Why is your HDL higher than your LDL?

High HDL and semi high LDL?

  • I just got my cholesterol checked. at 1st i was freaked out because the total level was 242. than the doctol said that my HDL was 101 which was awesome and anything over 60 was good. My LDL however was 134 and the goal is to be under 130, so he said its not so bad. So the question i have is a 134 LDL really bad given that I have such a high HDL level, and if so what can i do. My diet is very clean. 5 days a week ill take in about 2500 calories with 30 percent from good fats(flaxseed oil and almonds),30 percent protein, and 40 percent complex carbs. I also workout about 10 hours a week. ill have a burito or a pizza once mabe twice a week at most but twice is rare. so 1st question is my LDL really high given that my HDL is so good, and if so than what can I do to lower my LDL, or I just cant because of genetic

  • Answer:

A high HDL is good, period. Your LDL is fine, period. People with 2 risk factors for cardiovascular disease (smoking, hypertension, family history of heart attack or stroke, obesity, etc) are encouraged to keep their LDL below 130. Your LDL cholesterol goal depends on how many other risk factors you have. If you don't have coronary heart disease or diabetes and have one or no risk factors, your LDL goal is less than 160 mg/dL. Your cholesterol is great. Please stop worrying. Here is a link for more info: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4500
