Heart Medications particulary Beta Blockers?
-
Wife had VTach with Syncope on 4/19/10 and again on 4/20/10. Treated with Hypothermia and got an Implanted Cardiac Defibrillator. Heart itself--no blockages, no damage to heart muscle (two cardiac catheterizations) ejection factor was 62. Prior to event, blood pressure 120/70 heart rate 70. No cholesterol problems, pap and chest x-ray normal. After discharge (3 months later) had "atypical chest pain" which after numerous tests, and 30 day monitor-was determined to be unrelated to her heart. At the onset of testing and monitoring was placed on beta blocker (to lower blood pressure--which at time was totally normal -120/75 and to slow heart rate, which was 70.) Taking beta blocker RAISED blood pressure and lowered heart rate--to correct problem--they INCREASED beta blocker strength--again raised blood pressure and lowered heart rate--after test results-in another attempt to lower blood pressure--again raised beta blocker. Blood pressure went to average of 165/90 but kept increasing. When blood pressure got to 200/110--she was placed on four different medications to minimize the side effects of the beta blocker. At that point heart rate was average of 40 high of 50. So, ICD was adjusted to keep her heart rate at minimum of 60. Now, 1 year after her events she takes--Bylostic ( her fourth different Beta Blocker-beta blockers have been changed to minimize side effects) and because it causes water retention--she takes Lasix and because that lowers potassium--she is given Potassium Chl Micro ER and because she is on beta blockers--which for my wife raises blood pressure, she is also on amlodipine--So here is my question--since my wife's blood pressure WITHOUT any medications is right about 120/70 and heart rate was 70---and she has no heart damage, no blockage, good ejection factor, and heart is strong and good shape according to two cardiac catheterization taken --- why the devil on all these meds particularly a beta blocker--which raises HER blood pressure and slows her heart rate to where machine has to be set to keep heart rate UP--which then makes her take more meds (amlodipine) for high blood pressure, and causes her to retain water (she's gained 30 pounds- from 120 to 150- and feet, ankles, wrists, and hands all always swollen) must take Lasix and because she's on Lasix she has to take potassium....DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE???? Without meds (beta blocker) she doesn't need Llasix, amlodipine, or potassium and her heart rate is 70 and blood pressure is 120/70 and she has no damage to heart, no blockages, good ejection factor and great cardiac catheterization---HELP US!!!!
