I have an appointment with my dr,but how do I describe what I'm feeling?
-
I made an appt with my dr for these weird heart beats, but how do I get her to really understand how it feels(if you don't describe it well enough she'll just blow it off). It feels like my heart is taking a deep breath and doesn't work for a couple seconds(like it stops kind of) and I can't breathe when it happens, and I get dizzy and lightheaded. I'm also tired all the time. Would I describe what I'm feeling like how I just did? I don't want to walk away feeling like I could have done a better job explaining this to her. Any advice, especially if you've had to describe something(anything) like this(that's hard to describe) would be sooo appreciated. And thanks in advance.

Answer:
Those are palpitations. Everybody (or at least most people) get them occasionally. But if you're getting them frequently, that's a red flag and it's good that you're getting it checked out.

You did a great job explaining it. My heart stops or skips several beats and then starts back. I can't breath when this happens. I get dizzy and I feel tired all of the time. I don't do caffeine or OTC meds and I am not taking any prescribed meds either. Your doc should do an EKG, 24 hour holter or 3 day holter monitor of your heart beating, lab work and may even order an echocardiogram--like a echo they do of a baby only it's of your heart. None of these will hurt except perhaps the stick for lab work. Everything else I have had done since I experience the same symptoms. The skipping beat (for me) was a prolonged filling time of the ventricle. Check out the web site on the heart.
It sounds like your describing heart palpitations to me. thats a good description to me, if he doesn't prescribe you anything, get off caffeine, Sudafed, anything that increases your heart rate because that makes them worse in my experience.
Just say you have irregular heart beats and describe what you just mentioned above, and he will check your heart beat. Most doctors can tell right away when you have an irregular heart beat.
That should be sufficient...You're basically saying you have irregular heart beats, am I correct? If so, just by saying that, the doctor should know whats wrong, but you should always be as detailed as possible to help them diagnose the problem correctly.
request an EKG to make sure that everything is in order
