Can drinking coke cause diabetes?

How fast are the effects of diabetes increased by drinking coke every day in a over weight person?

  • My mother in law is a over weight diabetic. She often insisted that drinking coke is the only way she can get her blood sugar levels up when they are very low. She often has seizure, i have seen her have a few in the past 3 weeks. My question is how does drinking soda effect a diabetic and how fast does it speed up things like blindness

  • Answer:

I am not not sure but, is this ur question. What is so bad about drinking soda when ur diabetic and what happens to u when u drink it? OK it's good to drink a soda when ur blood sugar is low. But it's not the best idea to drink it everyday at lunch when ur sugar isn't low. Because diabetic people shouldn't get their blood sugar so high it's not good for them.

Ouch! Coke is certainly no help at all. If she kept her levels normal in the first place she'd have less chance of them dropping low (unless there is another issue). I'd say its best for her to speak to a doctor and see what a doctor says. It's no good going by old wives tales. As for the glucose meters, they are free. Check the link I've put in the source, lots of information about them and how to obtain one for free.

The high fructose corn syrup in the coke will accelerate the blood sugar spikes considerably. Avoid High Fructose Corn syrup as much as humanly possible. It causes a myriad of problems. Plain sugar is better for you than that stuff is. If she is low, she needs to eat fruit. A simple orange can do the job most times. She is bouncing from hypoglycemia to hyperglycemia very quickly. The key to control is to have even, but near normal blood sugars. I low carb, low fat diet, high in protein will help even out the blood sugars. Junk food is not the answer. The higher the blood sugars and the longer you have them, the faster you go blind, have toes cut off, and kidneys fail. Everyone is different. There is no way to tell just how fast a problem will develop. She needs to see her doctor and dietitian. Apparently, there is something very wrong. I assume that she is taking insulin. Perhaps a dosage adjustment would be beneficial. Low blood sugar can kill you now, high blood sugar can kill you later.

Regular coke is basically a sugar delivery system. It is doubtful she benefits from the beverage if she has a tendency to diabetes. She should not take sugar to "raise her blood sugar" without testing with a glucose meter, available at any pharmacy for about $20. If her reading is below 60, then she might use glucose tablets that absorb quickly, also available at a pharmacy without prescription. A cola drink is not indicated. How does she know her levels are low without testing. How low is low. The glucose tabs are used when insulin has dropped level below a safe level. Only testing first is safe. Lose weight and limit sugars. No cola unless fasting level is 60 to 110. Sounds like she could use a meter, diet, regular exercise and SEE A DOCTOR.

I am a diabetic and very responsible with my blood sugar. And your not supposed to keep you blood sugar really high. I am supposed to keep mine between 80 and 150. And when I have a low I eat glucose tablets or a small snake to get me back up to around 130. But I am a type 1 and you said your mother was obese and type 2 is more common in obese people so this answer may be no help at all. The best thing to do is to take her to her doctor and talk to the doctor about it. Hope I was some help.
