Am I allergic to corn?

Is it corn that caused my severe allergic reaction?

  • I suspect I'm allergic to corn products. I've avoided any starches, syrups, and things of the such. If I do have a little I notice a little itching and it goes away eventually. Tonight I let my guard down and made a stir fry with powdered mix. About two hours later (after jogging) I started to break out in rashes. My face was covered and hives were popping up by the second. I rushed in some Benadryll and went to the E.R. I actually fell faint at the desk after telling them I was having a reaction. I immediately came to and the whelled me back. I had an extremely low blood pressure and they basically gave me more Benadryll after I threw up the dose I took. My question is if I am indeed allergic to corn, how come every other time it was very mild and this time it was full blast? Any insight?

  • Answer:

Allergies can get worse as you get older, or as you are exposed more frequently to the allergen. It may also depend on the concentration of the allergen itself, and if your immune system was already weakened or fighting anything to begin with. You should contact an allergist and have a full scratch test done to determine whether you are indeed allergic to corn, and possibly other things.
