What are the symptoms of a metal allergy? (specifically reactions to rings)?
-
Please don't answer unless you know about metal allergies. So I have a swollen finger and don't remember injuring it. I posted a previous question about my ring and many people suggested that it could be an allergy. So Now I'd like to know what a metal allergy reaction is like? I've looked it up but swelling is only one of many possible symptoms. I'm only experiencing swelling and no rash or blistering or any of the other yucky symptoms listed, just swelling and slight redness from irritation of getting my ring off. Let me know what experiences you've had. P.s. I haven't had any problems for the past year with it until about 2 weeks ago when I noticed that it was tighter than usual. Can allergies show up after a year of no reactions and no past history of metal allergies. I'm asking here because I would feel kinda stupid asking a doctor about this lol.

Answer:
I have a nickle allergy and have had as far back as I can remember. Nickle is used to weld most metals especially in jewelry and is also what makes stainless steel so shiny. I know for me within five minutes of putting certain metals against my skin, it swells becomes very red and has a burning sensation. Did the swelling in your finger cease after you removed your ring? Allergies can develop anytime in your life. Keep in mind that your finger could be swelling from something completely unrelated. I have had my fingers swell under my rings, but it always goes away and doesn't really hurt anything.

This was actually one of my first symptoms of corn allergy. My rings became tight at first and then I started getting a rash between my fingers that looked a little like fire ant bites. My symptoms got worse and moved around and were all over the map. It took 20 years to diagnose and I got very, very sick before I figured it out. The reason it was so hard to diagnose is because corn is in everything and I didn't have the typical reactions that are linked with food allergy. Every meal that I ate would cause at least some reaction and I was making it worse day by eating corn repeatedly (corn is the source of dextrose in table salt). Now I know that swelling in the extremities can be caused by a food allergy, but I really had no idea then. You may be having an allergic reaction to something. Try removing all food additives from your diet to see if it effects the swelling. If I had known to try that one thing, it would have saved me years of declining health and pain. You would be amazed to know what is in your food and all of it is made from GMO corn and GMO soy. Corn and soy allergies are quite common and typically don't follow the normal rules about allergy. Anyway, doing this simple test diet here: http://www.msgmyth.com you can find out if you have a problem with additives.
