Skin itching - allergy?
-
I've been experiencing skin itching coming and going for about 16 months since I was pregnant. During pregnancy I used Aveeno Itch relief and it worked wonders. I also used cocoa butter lotion that also was good to relieve my itch. I took benadryl only once and it took the itch in about 2 hours and it did not come back for about 3 months. I was in Europe for about 3 months and I did not have any itch or whatsoever but about a month after I come back home, I started having this mild itching episodes again. The itch is mainly on my arms - wrists and elbows, knees, sometimes on my back. My eyes also get itchy and watery sometimes. Last winter I did some blood work and everything was ok, but a doctor that I'd seen in Europe told me my condition may have a neurological background (anxiety, stress etc). i also tend to believe it's weather or allergy related just because while in Europe I did not experience it at all. I must mention that I have dry sensitive skin. Any opinions and suggestions are highly appreciated.

Hi Annep, Dry skin too will cause the skin to be itchy. You seem to be aware of this. Weather does not cause allergic reactions. Anxiety doe not cause itchiness but if you are allergic to something it will make the itchiness worse. You state that your eyes get itchy and watery sometimes. To me this indicates that you are allergic to something in the air. Please try and find out if you are allergic to cigarette smoke, car exhaust fumes, pollens, dust, dander, environmental chemicals, dust mite, etc. Benadryl works wonders but it will make the person who takes it very sleepy and dry for about eight hours. You may want to try the second or third generation antihistamines eg Citrizine Hydrochloride. Avoidance of the offending substance will produce the best results.

Certain herbal and homeopathic remedies have been found to be beneficial in the treatment and prevention of allergies. These remedies are not only much safer to use than the traditional antihistamine drugs but also gentler for the body. Herbs such as Urtica urens and Plantago lanceolata (also known as plantain) contain effective anti-inflammatory and astringent properties and have a long history of treating inflammation, allergies and respiratory complaints. Quercitin is a highly effective herb that contains antioxidants and helps to boost the immune system and improve circulation while Euphrasia officinalis (Eyebright) maintains eye health and good vision. In addition, homeopathic ingredients such as Arsen alb. (15C) and Nat. mur. (D6) help to control allergy symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing chest, inflammation in the eyes and irritability. Together in a formula, these herbal + homeopathic remedies can: * Keep noses, sinuses, chest and eyes clear and healthy * Maintain the health of the respiratory system * Maintain skin integrity and health * Support the immune system * Maintain natural histamine levels within the normal limits * Soothe and support the health and functioning of mucous membranes Similarly, when it comes to the most difficult times of the year - i.e., when you are most prone to allergies - herbs such as Urtica urens, plantain, Allium cepa & Ars. Iod when used in a formula can support normal levels of systemic histamine; maintain clear eyes and noses; promote respiratory health & support and soothe the immune system.
