Is it possible to be allergic to Nickel?

If I am allergic to metal (nickel specifically). Will getting a tattoo cause allergic reactions?

  • I was hoping to get a tattoo sometime soon and was concerned about whether or not the needle would cause an allergic reaction. I usually get an itchy rash from wearing a necklace made from nickel or a continuous contact with nickel in general.

  • Answer:

Nope. I am too, and I had no trouble with my tattoo. I cannot wear any cheap earrings or watches though as I have a reaction to those. I have heard painting watch catches with clear nail varnish stops them irritating you , have never tried it though.Just stick to silver or gold for watches. Or plastic. lol

Probably not, but you should definitely ask the artist beforehand. They're used to questions and they certainly wouldn't mind you bringing up an an allergy - they don't want you coming back to them later complaining of an allergic reaction. Most artists are very knowledgable about what's in their needles. If you are allergic to any other metals, you might want to think about ink allergies as well - if not, no need to worry.

Different tattoos can use different bases. Find out from the tattoo artist what the composition of their ink is. See if you can do a skin test.
