Is it possible to be allergic to Nickel?

Is it possible to have a late allergic reaction to nickel?

  • I am 23 years old and I've been wearing watches since I was a kid. Late this summer I noticed that I got some rashes every time I wear a watch. I thought it was just the heat (well 34°C+ is normal here so I sweat a lot) so I discontinue wearing them. Now that summer is ending here and I don't sweat that much, I decided to wear watches again and still the rashes keep on appearing. Is it nickel allergy already? how come I only got this now? And those rashes only appear when I wear a watch, I have no allergic reaction to zippers, metal belt buckles and buttons. I love watches, it's just so sad that I can't wear them.

  • Answer:

Sure. The nickel content may be higher in that particular watch (or there is another metal that is causing you a problem). If you love it, you might try coating the inside of the band with clear finger nail polish.
