Am I allergic to cats?

I'm allergic to cats, never dogs, just got a new dog who lived with cats, and I think i'm allergic to him?

  • I am allergic to cats, when i'm in someones house who has a cat my eyes get watery my throat gets scratchy like I can't breath, it's awful. I've never been allergic to dogs, my wife and I have had two dogs in our past, and both were very long thick fur dogs. We got a new dog last night, we haven't had one in about a year. He has very short fur, like a lab. The home he lived in before had cats. I was fine last night, this morning I woke up with scratchy throat water eyes...feeling awful. Am I allergic to him now too? Or does he just have cat dandruff on him from living there with cats? Should I just give him a bath or am I going to have to take him back to his owner? This hasn't happened before? Is it possible for me to be allergic, I'm never allergic to dogs?

    my mom had the same problem when we first got a cat she was allergic to horse hair and we got our cat from a barn she would sneeze and her eyes would water, etc, etc. so she just took regular allergy pills and they did the trick for her until she was able to get used to our cat although it did take a few months for her to get used to his hair, I think it was worth it, he was one of the best cats ever

Give your dog a good wash every day for three or four days. Once is really enough but this way you can feel that you have thoroughly washed away any hairs etc from the cats. It is more than likely just an idea as you are allergic to the cats and not dogs. Get rid of the idea, it's irrational, but wash your dog so you have something positive and concrete to replace the idea.
