What's the best over-the-counter nose spray?

Can my nose get chronically stuffed?

  • I've had cats since I was 5 till I was 19. I can't remember when I started being allergic. I remember I was 11, and woke up having an asthma attack because of the allergy. Since then it got worse, but asthma medicine and allergy medicine always helped. I can't remember when my nose started to get really stuffed, but I know that when I was 16, my nose was pretty bad, and there was no medicine that helped. Nose spray didn't help. I moved for myself when I was 19. My mom been visiting me, and I've been visiting her. Every time I visit her, I have to take a bunch of allergy medicine (zyrtec) and I HAVE TO bring the asthma medicine. Lately, I've noticed that every time I go to my moms, I get really stuffed, and when I get home, I keep being stuffed. The longest I've been stuffed is 2 months after I've left my moms! This past Christmas I tried nose spray, and it WORKS! But the stuffiness comes back, so I have to use it twice a day (at home!). I've used it for 7 days now, and I know that I can't use it more than 10 days. I'm going to the doctor about this, but I was wondering if somebody had a tip, or experienced this themselves? I don't have anything left in the my apartment that has cat hair on it. I'm pretty sure I'm not allergic to dust. lol. Whats wrong with me? I get a little bit better when I'm at work, or outside. But when I get home.... It's not as BAD as when I'm at my moms, but it's still bothering me when I always have to breath with my mouth..

  • Answer:

You should see the ENT doctor to make sure that you do not have nasal polyps. These are results of long term/ chronic inflammation of the nasal passages and can give the feeling of perpetual stuffiness. If it is simply stuffiness due to allergic reaction and not the polyps, then the prescription sprays, e.g. Nasonex or Rhinocort are much better then the otc sprays (which can cause the rebound effect). Also, you may want to try the NeilMed (available from any drugstore) sinus rinse. I use it daily it is very effective for me.

Yes, you can be stuffed, producing histamines of your own, due to allergies. Many people go in for weekly allergy shots, and you should be assessed for this. See a doctor. Nose sprays don't work. They make it worse as you requireore. It's a rebound effect.
