Do I have a seafood allergy?

Seafood Allergy from Blood Pressure Medication?

  • My father's doctor recently changed his blood pressure medication. He's now taking Quinapril (used to take Altace for 30 years)... he's been a seafood lover all his life and never had any problems eating any type of seafood, but now, (coincidentally??) since his med has been changed, he can't eat crabs without getting a runny nose, or sick in the stomach... could it be the med?

  • Answer:

Doubt it, but again try a day without it and see if happens.

One never knows! This is my advice, contact the pharmacist rather than the doctor. I take a medication that prevents me from eating grapefruit. Odd huh? I'm not a fan of grapefruit anyway, but was a bit surprised to see a "no grapefruit" label on my prescription bottle. There may be something in the shell fish that simply does not agree with that medication (mercury maybe?). The pharmacist will know but the doctor likely won't. It's a two minute call to the drug store. I'm curious now. lol. PS. Please do not suggest to your dad that he take a day off his meds! Even if he did, it is in his system and the reaction would likely be the same til that drug was totally gone. It's blood pressure medicine for crying out loud! You don't just quit for a day. Good luck.
