What does allergy medication work the best?

Will a standard allergy medication work less effectively for a larger person?

  • I have allergies that have worsened over the years. Claritin used to take care of it. Now it seems some days it does nothing. I'm heavier now that I used to be. And I know that many pain medication dosages are based on a person's size and weight. Is the same true for all meds? Allergy medicines too? Could what works for a 150lb person not work the same for a 200lb person? Does anyone know of a case where they were told by a doctor to take more than one over the counter allergy pill at a time?

    Although you can build up a slight tolerance to medications, the way that your body reacts to medicine can also change over time and with weight. I suggest you call your pharmacist and ask whether or not an over-the-counter allergy medication can/and or should be taken in a larger dosage.The pharmacist will answer your question without you having to go to the doctor and getting a prescription. When you think about it, if a child is sick and needs medicine, doctors usually prefer to prescribe the dosage due to weight. hope this helps :)

Angela, believe me after a period of time u can build up a some kind of tolerance to your med and at this point when it is not working for you, you return to the doctor and have him prescribe something else to try. I don't think it has a thing to do with it (your weight) Also I have found that certain years are worse allergy wise and I was about to go in myself because I take allergia at night and if it isn't working I can't sleep worth heck as my sinus's' plug up, But after about a week it let up and went back to normal. Do not take more than your prescribed and do talk this out with your doctor this is no situation to experiment on.
