How do you check your height accurately without the doctor?

Parents and doctor think I have an eating disorder?

  • Hey guys, I just wanted to pose this question and gauge some other people's opinions in this issue. I'm a 17 year old guy (18 next week), I weigh 158lbs (72kgs) and I'm 5'11 in height with a bmi of 22. What I've been trying to do is lose some weight and get a a bit fitter, I wouldn't say I'm fat or anything but I feel I'm carrying too much weight around my middle and my legs/thighs. In order to tackle this, I'm cutting down quite significantly on my food intake and doing a lot more exercise (a lot of cardio/running specifically). As for food, I'm cutting down my food intake to about 2 eggs for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and a small portion of whatever my parents prepare for dinner. I've completely eliminated any kind of cakes/chocolate/sweets/fizzy drinks and fatty foods such as pies etc from my diet and now only drink water. As for exercise, I average about running 40 miles in a week. I check the packaging of all food I eat just to check calorie intake as what I'm aiming for is to consistently eat less than 1000 calories a day while hopefully burning more. My parents said they are concerned with me not eating as much and my doctor has said he is concerned over my attitude to eating and exercise. What do you guys think?

You are going about this in completely the wrong way. I don't blame you; it's an easy mistake to make. Your regime is perfect for losing muscle mass and wrecking your metabolism. You need muscle for your body to function, and you need it to keep your metabolism up to a reasonable rate so your body won't try to store every last calorie as fat in a desperate attempt to survive. 1000 calories a day is anorexic territory. You should eat a bare minimum of 2000 calories a day; you could probably get away with 3000 considering the amount of exercise you are doing. I would say around 2500 would allow you a slow, steady weight loss with the right exercise regime. If you want to build your muscles up, you'll need more calories. You need to make sure you are not over-exercising (yes, it's possible to do that, though you might not be) and you need to vary your exercise routine so you are not working the same muscles all the time and wearing them out; they need time to rest and recover between periods of exertion. (When you are fitter, your muscles can handle more, but you have to build them up slowly and gently to reach that point.) If you need more detailed advice, I would recommend speaking to a personal trainer or fitness coach who can show you where you are going wrong and suggest exercises you can do to achieve your aim without damaging your health and fitness.

I think they are right to be concerned. The average male needs 2500 calories - you are eating less than half of what you need to be healthy, plus anything you do eat you are immediately exercising off. Running 40 miles a week will not be attainable for long because as your body starves itself you will run out of energy. You need to eat more - by all means eat a lot of salad and veg and fresh fruit, but eat more of it than you currently are. Cutting fat and sugar from your diet is good, but only up to a point because the body NEEDS certain fats and sugars to keep going - the natural sugars in fruit and the natural fats in fish and nuts are healthy for you but will not make you fat. You need to be sensible - ruining your health for the sake of your waistline is silly.

1000 calories a day is about half of what you should eat. You have a problem.

PROBLEM

Anyone that counts calories and watches what they eat have an eating disorder. Your body is made to be a certain weight so no matter what you eat your body will always go back to the weight its supposed to be.

o-o uhh your a dude you need to be at least 2000 to work properly. The amount you should be doing you should be eating 3000. What they say is your bodys gunna make you gain weight if you eat less.

You are a teen and normally the teens for diets wont eliminate sugar, sodas and all those stuff and your eating less, you dont have eating dessorder because you are eating, small amounts but eating and every day, a person with eating dessorder just eats once a week or their vomiting every single time they eat, i think youre just changing your way to eat to be healthy because everyone know that the sugars and the soda are no good to your health and a lot of food either is and more if they are high in calories and bad colestesterol

This sounds very dangerous. When you excersise, you should be eating about the same amount, if not a little more. For what ypu're eating, and having that much excersise, does seem a little risky. You could get sick from not having enough energy to keep you going. I would suggest talking to you doctor about a healthier way to go about loosing what you want to loose. You need to be balanced and take this slower in order to do this is a healthy manner.

you should at least be eating 2100 calories... even if its healthy food, you need to eat more

Jenna

yes; you are systematically starving yourself to death. On that level of exercise you should be eating about 5000 a day. you are hopelessly malnourished and already horribly skinny. get help or die. Simple enough? please don't make your parents arrange your funeral.
