What does antibiotics do to a dental abscess?

Abscess after root canal does not show on panographic x-ray & antibiotics not helping.?

  • 5 days ago (Wednesday) I had a root canal done on tooth #4 (one root). I did not have any pain in the tooth prior to the root canal and started an antibiotic 2 days prior to the procedure. It took a double dose of novacaine to numb the tooth. After the anesthesia wore off the tooth had a dull ache and throbbing. It was worse by Thursday so I called the dentist. I was told it would go away in a few days and to take Advil for the pain. The Advil helped but wore off after only 1-2 hours so I was prescribed hydrocodone for pain - which did not help at all - and a stronger antibiotic. Each day the pain got worse and was unbearable through the weekend. Now the side of my face and cheek is swollen and I suspect I have an abscess. I went back to the dentist today (Monday) and he took a panographic x-ray and said the tooth looked fine and the x-ray did not show an abscess. I was told I had to wait it out for the antibiotic to work. I cannot go through another night of excruciating pain so I took 10mg of prednisone today (Monday) which I have on hand for my autoimmune syndrome. The prednisone really helped with the pain but I have read that it is not safe to take prednisone with an abscess or acute infection. If I take 10mg per day for 3 days and stop is this enough to cause a problem. Also, if the abscess doesn't show on the x-ray could there be something else going on? Up until today, for the past 3-5 days I have been alternating the hydrocodone & 600mg Advil every 2-3 hours and still cannot get pain relief. Help!

  • Answer:

dear. 1st of all stop the prednisone as it will make case worse coz it make more spread of infection which causing the abscess and the swelling. 2nd the change the antibiotic type (u may use amoxicillin500mg+metronidazole500mg tab 1x3x3 OR (CLINDAMYCIN 300 mg amp I.M 1x3x3) plus (diclofenac k 50 mg tab 1x2x3). 3d during taking the medicine the endodontic filling may need removal and retreated after the symptoms disappear coz it can be an accessory canal in tooth root need to be cleaned. try to eat well as u can coz healthy food will improve ur immunity. take care that the medicine i prescribed 4 u not taken if u r pregnant or lactating before u consult ur gyna. dr
