Hygienists make around 25-41 dollars per hour with most making 28-38 an hour (depending on years of experience and where they work in the USA). An assistant can train on the job OR get a 1 year certificate from a community college or training school to begin working. A hygienist needs a 2 year or 4 year degree in dental hygiene. Before being allowed to apply to a program the student needs to take about 1 year worth of prerequisite courses. Then they have to take national and state licensing boards (a hands on exam and a written exam). Both tests take pretty much all day (the written exam is 8 hours long).
