IF U ARE A DENTIST please answer?

Scared of dentist please someone answer?

  • ok i havent been to the dentist for quite a while. i was only taken a few times as a child and those werent that bad but i am now an adult and have had 3 kids and during the last two pregos my teeth started to go to hell. one of my canine teeth chipped off the front of the tooth and now it is starting to go black. i also had a very small cavity between my very front top teeth when i was a child. the dentist at the time filled this however years later it fell out and now the cavity has returned and is now decaying from the inside out as well as spreading to nest tooth. it is only small part of my teeth but still very embarrassing when smiling or talking to strangers. i am only 24 and i want my smile back that i had 5 years ago. now i KNOW I HAVE TO GO to the dentist but i was hoping maybe some one would be able to tell me a little of what to expect that they will want to do. also my main fear of the dentist is not the pain but feeling the dentist pull and yank on a tooth in my mouth(i have a back tooth i know will have to be pulled)just have them tugging and pulling and sticking me with needles in my gums. i hate the idea of them being right there in my face in my mouth. its different then say someone stitching a cut on your leg. anyone else understand? anyone with any thing to say would help.

I can understand. I used to be afraid of the dentist myself. I think educating yourself either by online research or by asking the dentist questions will ease your mind. The dentist is a smart person; for them to be able to go to and graduate dental school is not an easy task and they have seen many different cases, so your questions won't be anything they haven't heard before. Some dental offices offer conscious sedation (nitrous oxide, laughing gas) to help you relax. If you are relaxed during the procedure, it makes things easier on you and on the dental professionals who are working on you. Some offices also offer IV sedation where you are knocked out. I have assisted with tooth extractions many times and a lot of them were put under for it. In Dentistry, an ounce of prevention is worth lots of money and time later on down the road. Keep up on dental cleanings, floss daily, keep up on your nutrition. The condition of your mouth will effect the rest of your body in one way or another and the decay that is in your mouth will be passed on to others that you kiss or share eating utensils with etc. (you can pass the decay on to your kids!) Women who are pregnant really need to keep up on their dental health because hormones are kinda goofy during that time and the inflammation that's going on in the mouth can cause pre-term birth. When you do go to the dentist, have them see if you need a bite splint as well. A lot of people clench and/or grind their teeth at night and don't know it. Have your bite checked too so that upper and lower teeth come together properly to prevent teeth getting chipped over a period of time. I wish I would have done that and I had some upper back teeth break off.

Why don't you look for a dentist that uses sedation. That way you will be out during the necessary procedures. You can also minimize future problems with your teeth by using good hygiene (brushing every morning and brushing and flossing at night) and getting your teeth cleaned every 6 months.

I was a dental assistant for over 9 years. Straight up: your going to at the very least have a root canal on those teeth. Could be as bad as them having to pull them and needing a bridge or partial. Depends if they can save the roots of the teeth. If they can and they don't need to drill a lot they may do a root canal and filling over. If they need to drill a lot of it out they'll probably need to do a root canal, and crown. Either way between all of it (extraction, root canals, crowns) expect to pay a couple thousand. But the longer you wait the worse/more expensive it will get. Unless you just want them pulled and don't mind the spaces. Of course this may cause your other teeth to move to fill in those spaces which may mess up your bite alignment. Best answer is to see a dentist. Ask family members/friends to refer you to theirs so you get a good doctor. My Mom is a chicken and it took me years to get her to go. She needed a lot of work done but even with the pain (and there wasn't much since they numb you up) the outcome is well worth it. Especially you being so young.

I was like you, went to the dentist when I was 5, got scared and didn't go again until I was 25. I found a dentist that was kind and gentle and understood my fears and gradually worked on my teeth to fix them up. Today's dentistry is a long way from the old days - I actually had a filling yesterday, they apply a numbing gel on a q-tip that really works! This makes it painless when they use the needle - the needles themselves are much tinier than they were, so REALLY, if they use the gel you'll feel almost nothing. As far as extractions - I also had a double extraction about a month ago, a wisdom and one along from it. This stuff is done by a dental surgeon, a specialist. Now I have tough teeth and hard jawbones so he had to take them out in pieces - don't faint!! It didn't hurt! But they try to avoid any discomfort or pain for the patient. If you are totally terrified you CAN get some dentists that will give you a shot and knock you out completely (a wussy male friend of mine did this) it avoids you even knowing what is going on or feeling anything, but of course you have to pay for the specialist anesthetization and doesn't help you to cope with and overcome your fears. I'm a big wuss, but thanks to kind and thoughtful dentists I jump in the chair and relax, they know what they are doing and want to help, no hurt you.
