Jaw pain....how can i tell what is causing it?

my jaw has been hurting for days now on the right side. it hurts when i bite my teeth or open my mouth wide or if i move my jaw to the left. i know that i have a cavity on that side(the right) but is that what is causing the pain or is it something else? how can i tell what it is?
