What does antibiotics do to a dental abscess?

Dental abscess, already taking antibiotics but its getting bigger and dentist apointment only in 3 days?

  • I have an dental abscess, went to the hospital on sunday and there they subscribed me antibiotics to take for 5 days. Today the 5 days end, the swelling on my face disappeared but the abscess itself grew and i don't think it's showing signs of bursting. I have already an dentist apointment for next Tuesday, to find out what cause it, since both teeth in that area already had an root canal treatment. Question is, should i continue to take the antibiotics, since in the instructions says we shouldt stop treatment until its gone and it will eventually burst? Or it might not burst and get somekind of complications? By the way, im not thinking on bursting it on myself, guess doing it at home would be dangerous and possibly kind of stupid. Any help i would really be gratefull.

  • Answer:

Keep taking the antibiotics. This will fend off septicaemia which can occur in severe cases.

Keep taking the antibiotics until they have all gone. The infection in the abscess is still there. As it has not gone it may be that the dentist needs to cut it to allow the pus out - this happened to me. The dentist can also prescribe more antibiotics as well if necessary. What I would do is to ring the dentist today and get his expert advice. You will only be worrying about it all weekend otherwise. Hope you are not in pain now as at it's worse it's dreadful.
