Finishing elastics too tight!?

I'm exactly 14 days away from getting my braces off. My orthodontist gave me "finishing elastics" which is one band that zig zags from the second last back tooth all the way up the side. It is very similar to the elastics I had after upper & lower jaw surgery in which I cannot open my bite and basically speak through clenched teeth. Besides it feeling horrible, I am not allowed to take them off! I can only eat/brush but he instructed that removing them for 30minutes+ will drastically alter the movement and he may not be able to take them off in two weeks. I have absolutely 0 desire to continue wearing these elastics for longer than possible, but I work in a resteraunt and have to speak to strangers all day. How can I cope with this? Would removing them for longer periods of time really hinder the movement that much? Suggestions would be fantastic!
