How long does it take to fix an overbite with braces ?

I have an overbite and had braces taken off after wearing them for over 2 years a couple of years ago. I was told when starting that braces alone will not correct an overbite, that it would take a costly surgery to do that. Braces are meant mainly to straighten and align your teeth. Although I am an adult in my 40's and you are still a teenager. If they are saying the braces will correct your overbite then they must know what they are talking about. I would say that the orthodontist was probably correct in their estimate. But it is just an estimate and perhaps it will take longer. Realize if this happens it means they are trying to make sure they do a good job; because normally braces are a lump sum payment, and if it goes over the estimated time there is no further charge. The braces shouldn't make your lips look big, although they may hurt the insides of your lips, especially when you first get your braces. They should have wax to put over the wire and posts of your braces, make sure you get it and use it as needed. I recommend you ask for that wax every visit, even if you don't need it. It is good to have a supply, because when you do need it, you will really need it.

Ok heres the deal, most treatment with braces lasts 18 months, that is if you brush and floss and keep appointments like you are supposed to. Now braces do not make your lips permanently bigger but at first they may appear to be a little bigger because of the bulk of the braces. Some people DO have to wear braces longer, it depends on the severity of each case. Sounds to me like yours is simple. It will be totally worth it in the long run.
