Can you recycle old x-rays?

Too many xrays for braces?

  • Hi, I was going to get braces so I got a few xrays of my teeth and after we were done with the xrays they told us how much braces would cost and it was going to cost over 6000$. So, we changed orthodontists so its cheaper (3000 cheaper) and they want more xrays and I dont feel like it is good for me to be getting all these xrays... Would they be willing not to take xrays of my teeth? And i cannot ask my other orthodontist to send the xrays over because they refuse to... help?

  • Answer:

I’m a dentist. X-rays are part of your record, and no doctor in his right mind would turn over x-rays to another doctor. We can loan them to another doctor (at our discretion), but we would never simply give them away. If your first orthodontist isn’t willing to send your x-rays to the second orthodontist, then you can ask for copies of the x-rays. This request cannot be refused (although, the doctor can charge you a fee for them). These copies/duplicates should be of diagnostic quality. As far as having more x-rays taken, I understand your concern. It is always preferable to avoid taking x-rays and thus it is preferable to utilize the ones that have already been taken. If push comes to shove, however, then go ahead and let the second doctor take new x-rays. The amount of radiation is quite small.

if the original ortho won't send the xrays then yes you will need to retake them. The new ortho needs to see what issues you may or may not have as well as needing them for other reasons. Just make sure they put a lead apron on you.

Any dentist needs the proper x-rays in order to do a good job, so if they say they need them it's because they do. What bothered me more is the fact you can't get your old x-rays, if you paid for those, you're entitled to a copy of them. You might want to contact your old ortho and ask them that, they cannot refuse that request but they can charge for it and may ask you to sign a consent.

The dentist needs to take x-rays so he has a better understanding of what needs to be done. You could ask your previous orthodontist to give you your x-rays and they have to give it to you, especially if you've paid for them. But if its too awkward than just take a walk in open air, after x-rays and the radiation will not harm you. You could also do the x-rays in the period of couple of days, instead of doing it all at once and you will be okay.
