I have a crown in one of my tooth and is infected, should my dentist take it out?
-
This is a new dentist, very young, I guess and I don't trust him...he tried to extract the infected one, but it has a crown on it I felt he was going to take my jar out of my mouth..I could not continue with the proceeding...I was horrified..now they wanna put me out in order to do that...please help me...what should I do?? I don't want to be asleep while they perform oral surgery with me...the dentist say it is infected and in order to have an implant, I need to get rid of that infected tooth, a root canal would not longer work on this case...my tooth is almost gone and I only have the crown...I really don't wanna do it....need some advice...the proceeding is scheduled to be done next week July 7,2008

There are several issues here! 1. trust: if you don't trust him, get another one but please remember that age is no factor. Competency is. My first dentist (when I was 7) was 56 and was a complete ding dong. The dentist I had when I was 21 was 28 and very competent. 2. it appears he tried to extract the infected one and you couldn't take it. This has nothing to do with him, and much to do with you. Many people (me included) can't take the sounds of dentistry. But it's not the dentist fault. Being put under might be your best bet. If you freak too much for an extraction, for your own safety, you need to be put under. 3. the root canal should ALWAYS be tried before extracting the tooth unless there is no tooth left but roots (which isn't your case, since there is a crown on that tooth --- it means you do have some tooth to work with). However, if the RC fails you will have to pay for the RC plus the extraction plus the implant. If you skip the RC then you won't have to pay for that. This is something you need to consider. Because of all these reasons, get a second opinion. But remember: you will have to be put under. The only alternative is that you find a way to stop freaking when you hear those sounds. I couldn't find it, was put under and don't regret it.

I disagree with any tooth removal even infected, root canal treatment works where lot of people think it dosnt, the only case to remove a tooth is badly broken or grade 4 loose, dont take out, just temporary remove teh crown, make root canl place teh crown again

Go to another dentist. The tooth may be cracked, not infected and should be pulled. As for trying to save teeth with root canals and crowns- some teeth can't be saved. If they are cracked all the way down, they have to be pulled or the pain will never stop, even with a root canal and crown- believe me I've already been down that road.

if you don't trust the dentist then i would DEFINITELY get a second opinion. in fact, if you don't trust them i don't see why you just don't get a new dentist altogether. don't take your instincts about the dentist too lightly. trust is a HUGE factor when it comes to your well-being, and having someone you lack that confidence in from the start do that type of procedure is a bad idea... not just for you, but for the dentists as well because it is unfair for them to be put in that position seemingly unjustly (to them), regardless of how right you think you are. do both of yourselves a favor and seek medical attention elsewhere. good luck.
