How can I get porcelain veneers?

Each time you get porcelain veneers, do they shade down more of your tooth each time?

  • When you get veneers for the first time i am aware that they shave down your natural tooth, but say after 10 yrs you need the veneers replacing, would they need to shave down more of your tooth?

    You can have porcelain veneers with or without tooth preparation. On both situations you can choose the shade of your venners. There are some diferences between the 2 tecnics. If your dentist use porcelain veneers without tooth preparation, you should expect a bigger tooth and a greater risk of gingivities. On the other hand, if your dentist chooses to use porcelain veneers with tooth preparation (the most usual) you will have the best estetic result but with some enamel loss.

No. The reason they do it is because the veneer needs to fit flush with your other teeth. if they simply placed it on top of the old tooth they would be too pronounced and you would look like you had a mouth full of mints. So they shave the tooth ever so slightly so that when the veneer is placed against it it is in line with the rest of the teeth. It also gives a rougher surface for the tooth to be bonded to.
