Can a "open" root canal be dangerous?
-
My father said he was going to get my teeth fixed and only got me the root canals. well, i have lost the temp filling and it really hurts. i cant afford the crowns! i did not even have a job when the root canals were done! i have none of the papers.... idk, i think im screwed... the job i have now does not pay me enough. i quit so i could full time look for a better paying job faster. it did not work... i have no money, the bank messed up and shorted me half my pay check... and now i have to deal with this tooth... how do i fix it and what happens if i cant afford to fix it?

Answer:
Yes, it could be dangerous. Some dentists will do a two step root canal (RCT). The first appointment the majority of the nerve is removed from the inside of the tooth and the pulp and roots are hollowed out. The inside of the tooth is then irrigated with a solution that makes it sterile and then a temp filling is placed. At the second appointment the RCT is finished and the fillers for the canals where the nerve was in the roots of the tooth are placed and sealed. If you have only done the first part of this treatment and your filling is out you are getting bacteria from your saliva inside the tooth which could cause infection and can spread (over time) to other areas in the body. Buy some temp filling material at a drug or store like Walmart and fill the tooth until you can get to a dentist. Best to visit your dentist sooner than later.

The oly REAL way to fix it is if you go to the dentist and get it fixed. Trust me. I have had one and i knoe how bad they hurt. I got mine fixed and its all better now. I would say the worst that can happen is that that tooth will just keep getting worse and worse. Have you told your dad about it? I bet if you tell the dentist your situation and they could maybe, possibly, hopefully, could help you out.

Definitely is dangerous. I'd go back to the dentist and get a new temporary put in and have them put a liner in there, which will help calm the nerves down. If you already have pain, you may have an infection at the root of that tooth and you may need it removed.... just go get it fixed and ask your dad to take care of it, and they might be able to set up a payment plan for you. Good luck

The pain will subside. Remember that the nerves for those teeth were removed. You'll need to get the crowns but you can wait several months before doing it. I too have two root canals without caps. Im getting them done next month. Just wait till you have ins again. It'll b fine. Just make sure to clean thoroughly and even rinse with hydro peroxide diluted with water. Its a good antiseptic.

I had a root canal done and the filling came out. It didn't hurt at all though, I just had a hole in the middle of my tooth. I ignored it and my tooth started falling apart piece by piece. It's almost gone now! Best thing would be to ask your Dentist about it.

I had this happen, and it took me around 2 years to get the crown put on. Because of the root canal, and the fact that I had shattered half my tooth (hence needing the root canal), there was nothing to protect the internal part of the tooth, and it rotted and decayed from inside. By the time I got it fixed, they had to remove most of the tooth down to the gumline, and instead of having a partial crown attached to mostly real tooth, I now have a full crown attached to a partly real root. Get it fixed as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more of your tooth you lose. I'm not sure, but there may also be some risk of gum infection if the decay bores down below the gumline where you can't clean it. See how much it costs to get the tooth cleaned and a new temp filling put on it, then be very careful with the tooth. I believe my crown cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000, though it was paid for by insurance so I may not have heard right. If a temp cap is like $200, you may be able to afford that while you save up or get dental insurance.
