Isn't tom kha soup supposed to be sweet?
-
My fiance and I love Thai food. We order out from a local place sometimes, but when we're looking for a nice night out, there's a place a few towns over that serves really tasty authentic Thai food. I've had Tom Kha soup from a couple of different Thai restaurants, and it's always been pretty sweet (this place was no exception). That's one of the reason, I like it- sweet and spicy, but a little bit sour and savory. Yum. I'd love to reproduce it in my own kitchen. I'm looking up recipes online, and so far, I've only seen a few recipes that incorporate sugar, and the other ingredients didn't look very authentic. I've used canned coconut milk in my curry recipes, but it's never very sweet unless I add palm sugar or use cream of coconut. By itself, it just tastes like... coconut milk, heh. So my question is, is the stuff I got in the two restaurants I've been to way sweeter than it's supposed to be or are there just no good recipes online? Any suggestions for one? I have made some pretty good Tom Yum soup using a Tom Yum Paste... Perhaps there's a Tom Kha paste out there as well? Thanks. : )

Answer:
Chicken soup is the best obviously. Nothing is better than it.

Dear Rachel. You have got a very interesting question here. Tom Yum, is a soup. If you notice within this soup there are herbs like Galungal, and Lime Leaves. The Tom Yum soup is made in Prawn (Goong). Now let's analyse this, the same texture in Tom Kar has similarities in Thai Herbal Ingredients. There are also Galungal and Lime Leafs. The word Gai is "chicken". OK? You had some experiences with tom Khar Gai before, it was not sweet enough. There is a misunderstanding between communication line between you and customer service functions. I am trying to tell you straight, Thai restaurants ar family run structure and its formal casual operating basis. You can always ask. Customers are always rights. RIGHT? Thaiguy.
