How do I become an environmental engineer?

How to become an audio engineer?

  • i really need some advice on the road to becoming an audio engineer. for a long time now ive been indecisive as what i want to do with my life. i know know that i want to be an audio engineer ive looked online and couldnt fund much info. ive already taken a class on the basics of pro tools, but i know for a fact that general knowladge on that one program isnt going to guarentee me a job in a studio. whats the usual path to become an engineer or a producer or a tech in a professional-grade studio? i have much knowladge of how the music industry and performing arts work seeing as ive been playing guitar for 8 years now. but i dont know much from an education stand point of how to have a career in the music industry *i did alright in high school and did horribly in community college cuz it wasnt where i wanted to be, i recently applied to my state university and was denied, so i dont think college is much of an option for me now. what would be my next move to achieve my dream profession?

schooling doesn't matter in the music industry, it's a matter of who you know. all you need is a foot in the door, then you work your way up. there are schools that are specifically for audio engineering. these will give you a well rounded idea of what a studio is like and give you experience using the same gear as the pros. there are certifications that you can get as well. most of these schools have a required internship as well that will help you get that foot in the door. the good thing about these schools is that you don't have to go for 4 years. when it comes to these schools i think you are paying for a foot in the door, which if you can afford it is a good way to go, but if you can't, just work hard and try to get an internship at a studio. remember the internships are usually going to be unpaid, so remember that when you are thinking about everything. if you can get yourself in good with a studio and get yourself in as an intern, or entry level something, then go for it. there isn't really a need to go to a school that will teach you what you can learn hands on at a studio. going to school helps as far as getting the internship because they know that you have an idea of whats going on with recording. some random person off of the street wont have the skills as someone that has spent months preparing and studying recording. when it comes to big studios and big cities, there is a lot of compitition to get into one of these studios. if you are in a smaller area with some small studios, you may be able to skip the schooling and learn under an engineer there. then you could go to a bigger studio without having to be a pee-on intern

Honestly, if you F-ed up your education, it's gonna hurt you in the long run. Colleges are usually more lax than universities about their acceptances though. It might be different in the States seeing as I am from Canada. But, one way you could get around that is the number one key to "anything" in the entertainment industry: CONNECTIONS, CONNECTIONS, CONNECTIONS!!!! I don't think a lot of people understand that in the music business since I see your kinds of questions all the time. It's better to have a lot of connections and little talent, than to have a lot of talent and little to no connections. Take Paris Hilton for example. She's a terrible artist.. yet, she probably makes more money than anyone on here. Why? Cause everyone knows her. However, that being said, if your talents don't match your connections.. then chances are, those connections aren't gonna stay for very long. I would suggest trying out different programs and look harder into college educations in the music stuff.
