What can I do to improve stage presence?

Stage presence and how to fix it?

  • I am in a band, pretty new to the gigging experience while my band mates have a history and are well used to it. We have had a few small shows so far and it has shown me that I need to step it up with my stage presence. We are a 3 piece band me being the bassist. Now we have had a few shows and I have noticed I am not appearing to rock out onstage as much as I should. Friends have mentioned why I don't move around. Now I am not that outgoing as a person but I do however want to fix this and just show how much I enjoy being up there. Though my band mates tell me to move around jump around, and it seems as if they rely on me to be the energy of the band since the drummer cant really do much and the guitarist has to worry about singing. Now this may seem like a stupid question to ask when the simple answer is to just not care and rock out. Well I just need some advice on how to prepare for this. I think it is also partially due to anxiety as I do get anxiety striking me for shows so there is some psychological things going on as well. Does anyone have any advice for me? I really need to get myself out of my comfort zone and get into the stage presence.

Just like an athlete, you have to get yourself in shape for "game time". Start "rocking out" and "getting into it" during your rehearsal sessions. Really let yourself go and don't be afraid of your band mates or anyone else watching giving you a hard time about it. In no time, it will become as much a part of your playing as your riffs, even when you're on stage. Another thing you can do is to try thinking of it as a job requirement, the way you would any other kind of work. For example, you may not wear a suit and tie in your day to day life, but you pretty much have to when your job requires it. It's kind of the same for your performance on stage. In your day to day life, you're not very outgoing or loud, but as a bassist on stage, you have to be. In other words, it's not how you really are, you're just doing your job. But remember to have fun no matter what ;)
