  So you want to get an impressive recording. Get an audio interface to get the audio from your source (mic) into the computer. There are many ways you can do this: Get a mixer and connect the output jacks to your in on your computer (set it up as a line input rather than a microphone in your device settings) Use a microphone with a built in usb interface such as the new samson one (cant remember the model sorry) A standalone audio interface with XLR mic ins, this connects to a usb port and acts as a sound card. You need a piece of software to record your audio. I personally use cubase 4 but there are many free ones. I recommend "Kristal Audio" for multitrack recording and audacity for just recording a single track. Set up the external device/soundcard to record audio on that channel in your DAW (audio software). Set a metronome to play along to but make sure that this isnt recorded on the track you are recording as you wont want this in the final mix. One thing to remember, "You cant polish a turd" Meaning that you cant make a decent recording by using low quality microphones.
