Depends on your professor. You should closely study everything he/she went over in class/lecture. This should be your main focus, use your book only when you don't understand something from your in-class notes. It is probably better to over-prepare for the first test because you don't know what to expect, so spend as much time on it as you can without driving yourself crazy. Hopefully after you take this one you will realize that on subsequent tests you don't have to cram so much; but again, it depends on your professor. My civ1 teacher was one of the most demanding I have had.
