What's the difference between Social Studies and History?

What is the difference between social studies classes and history classes?

  • Answer:

Social Studies focuses more on land and maps. It's more of a Geography base class set. Usually they're taken in middle school (grade school). History classes focus more on the people and the culture of a certain place or area that the history class is teaching on (ie: World History, American History, etc). In middle and high school the two terms are pretty much interchangeable. Come college its either a History class or a Geography class.

It depends on the school really... but for the most part they are completely interchangeable. Generally Social Studies is a term for pretty simple history.

Social studies refers more broadly to all studies of social interaction, history being a part of that. Social studies include sociology, psychology, history, etc. The two terms are pretty much interchangeable, but other classes besides history can fit under the banner of social studies.
