Background Check for Nursing School?

Criminal Background checks for nursing school?

  • Hi everyone!...My name is Ashley and I have applied for college starting the spring semester (January 2010). Its clear that there are several prerequisites that are needed first before application for the nursing program. Heres my question: In the nursing program guidelines...they conduct criminal background checks for all accepted applicants. Back in 2007 I was convicted of attempted card fraud. I was young and stupid, but obviously cant change it now. Will this keep me from attending nursing school or should I continue with the program without hesitation? I would hate to take unnecessary courses if I will wind up changing my major. Please help and thanks everyone!:)

  • Answer:

If you were 18 or younger, you need to see a lawyer and get your records expunged. Most nursing programs are run Fall to Spring with classes that are required in a sequence. You may end up wasting time and money by starting in the Spring. Go see a lawyer for a free consultation and bring your records. Nurses have huge responsibilities so you don't need to have a degree and then have trouble getting a job because your records were not expunged. You also will have to answer the FAFSA questions around felony charges and job applications have them as well. Do yourself a favor and get this off your record.

If you have been advised by an attorney, why are you asking people on the internet what your options are. You would only recieve misguided information. But know this, no school can stop you from learning. However, when it comes to nursing, as far as profession is concern, your chances of landing a great job in the field will be limited. But, that's not the end of the world, you will always have to provide an explanation for the conviction. Nursing field is serious business and not only is there zero tolerence, patients have great concern who is provide care for them and their families. You would have better opportunities in the future as the years go by providing you have no problems with the law. You must be careful in protecting your interest as a professional. Here's one way of looking at things, how comfortable are you if you were being treated or in care of a convicted criminal. No matter the circumstances, it has a status. This means that whatever hard work you perform or opportunities you seek, no longer will you have to work twice as hard, you will need to work three times harder just to proof your worthiness. Simply because a criminal record brings up issues as far as trust is concern. Honestly, I would say, ask God to provide the way for you. Only He can be your strength and pave the way for your future. Get counseling and advice from professionals in seeking out your goals. Take this very serious because we live in an era of terrorism, selfishness and greed. Therefore, high security and alertness makes everyone a suspect. Criminal or not, everyone's background will be looked upon and checked out rather they know it or not.

You need to see the director of your program and the Dean of your school if you have criminal convictions. I don't think one fraud charge would preclude you, but you need to make sure.
