Why should gym be mandatory?

How to have gym removed from my schedule?

  • Okay, so I'm in 8th gradr and I just got my schedule for the second semester. I got gym 3rd period, and study hall 7th period. I am aware that gym is mandatory. But, my twin brother did not get assigned gym, my 2 best friends didn't get assigned gym. They did not have gym last semester. I am not wanting to do gym. Its not because I'm lazy, not because I'm afraid to change. I hate my gym teacher. He's a total ***. If you don't play a sport, your worthless and hea going to treat you like crap. I don't play sports for my school because of how much they care about every student playing. Sports Question is, do I go to my guidance counselor and request a schedule change? If its mandatory, why aren't others not having to take gym? Is it possible to get it changed? Thanks:) Btw, I'm a girl, I live in Ohio, and im in 8th grade. Just in case you need that information!

You actually have several questions here, so let's separate them. First, you are concerned that other people seemed to get out of gym class, but you are being forced to take it, and you feel it is unfair. I hear you. And like you, I hated gym. The answer to your question, though, is that you may be in a very different situation from the situations of your brother and your friends. There may be health issues or personal problems involved which you know nothing about, so you really cannot assume that other people got out of gym but they are "exactly the same as you." Maybe they are not. Second, trying to whine your way out of a requirement will probably not turn out to be a good idea in the long run. You don't have to explain to me why gym is lousy -- I know all the reasons first hand. But struggling to skip the requirement will eventually create more problems for you than it solves. You can give a shot to going to the guidance counselor, but you probably will not get removed from the gym class unless there is a compelling reason, and you will probably need the support of your parents. Simply not liking the teacher is probably not a strong enough reason for a change. It couldn't hurt to investigate, but in the meantime, prepare yourself to deal with the gym class, realize that it is only temporary, and remember that someday, when the teacher who is giving you fits now is old, sick, and forgotten, you will be young, beautiful, and have a terrific life. Outlasting their nastiness is the best revenge.
