How hard is it to be a ultrasound tech?

How do I go about becoming a ultrasound tech?

  • I have a associates degree in business administration(rec'd in 1998) and a bachelors in IT. I am seriously seeking a career change and want to become a ultrasound tech. What would be the best way to go about becoming a ultrasound tech without having to do a lot of schooling? Also, I am wanting to change careers so bad that if I can get a diploma or certificate(something I can complete in under 8 or 9 months) first just to get out of the position Im in now then go on and pursue further studies for the career I would be willing to do so.

  • Answer:

You would have to find an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. There are no legit programs that can be done in 8 or 9 months. There is a lot to learn with ultrasound, not to mention the actual hands-on scanning techniques. Probably the shortest would be 18 months, but most programs are 2 years. http://www.caahep.org/Find-An-Accredited-Program/

Other answers

Usually an associate degree is required by employers. A few of the general ed classes you have previously completed would probably fulfill the general ed requirements for a sonography degree. There are also a few one-year certificate programs available.
